people, planet, profit
portuguese designers rita melo and rita carrilho of blindesign make all kinds of accessories with both social and environmentally sustainable aspects. their products, which include tote bags, pencil cases, document cases, wallets and clutches, are all made from recycled milk cartons.
once they receive the milk cartons, rita & rita send the raw materials to a center for handicap people, who clean and break down the cartons. this process serves as a part of their rehabilitation – a way for them to be involved with an outside project as well as working the muscles in their hands. after this, the broken down material is sent to a women’s prison in portugal where the women are paid to stitch the bags.

through this process many people benefit and so does the planet. blindesign’s work is socially creative and takes into consideration all parts of their production process – making their products as sustainable as can be.
