Ask Mr. Kate: styling military paraphernalia
Dandy writes, “Hi Mr Kate ! I just wanted to start off by saying you are suchhhh a lovely fashion inspiration ! I check your OOTD’s all the time:) So with that being said I had a quick question, my style leans more towards dark colors like burgundy, browns..dark blue & mustard (I learned that one from you!) and olive green because it goes well with my skin tone and hair. Recently my dad hauled out all of his old military paraphenilia and I fell in love with it. Mostly because it’s all dark green and camouflage, but I’m a little clueless when it comes to incorporating them into outfits. I grabbed his old dog tags, a camo field jacket (even though it’s baggy on me), his old b15 air force jacket and some camouflage sweaters I shrank in the washer..could you help me out ? If anybody could do it, it would be mr Kate !”
Hi Dandy! What a fun and meaningful style challenge and thank you so much for your kind words and support! I love the toughness of military/army garb and my instinct is to usually play against type and pair camouflage with something girly. Think camo with lace tights or skinny jeans and a rhinestone necklace. The Air Force jacket paired with a short floral dress and studded boots. Try mixing your dad’s dog tags with other necklace charms on the same chain. Here are some of my military themed outfits and some others I pulled for inspiration…
I wore this over-sized camouflage sweater with a black body-con dress from American Apparel and “girly” lace tights from Forever 21. The jewelry is all Mr. Kate with a fist-full or Buried Treasure rings. If you have an old pair combat boots, try studding them! Speaking of studs…
This shirt is from Zara, not authentic military wear, but it may give you some inspiration to stud some of your dad’s old clothes! I love camo and studs! Here’s a DIY video where I stud a pair of shorts.
This over-sized, army-green jacket I wore in this OOTD with bright orange jeans, studded wedges and a slouchy shirt. I accessorized with layered necklaces, orange lipstick and messy bun. Think of army green as a neutral – you can pair it with any color!
Here are some other looks I like…
Over-sized camo jacket paired with a tutu, bustier and boots. You can really see the girly meets masculine juxtaposition here.
And here too with the chunky rhinestone necklace. Notice how there’s rhinestones on the epaulets of the army jacket too! You can attach flat-backed rhinestones the same way I made the DIY Jeweled Elbow Pads.
Red lipstick, a pop of color bag and wedge sneaks are a fun way to funk up camo print.
Try putting your dad’s dog tags on a more delicate chain to make them more feminine or keep them on a long chain and add some fun, vintage-inspired charms like old keys, rhinestones, etc.
Hope that helps and tweet some photos of your styling creations! Thanks for your question Dandy!
