the red shoe district

March 7th, 2010

todays cloudy day adventure took us to Venice Beach. Joey, Ali and i went to lunch at Seed, a macrobiotic restaurant, where we had some amazing burgers and bowls of seasonal goodness and mini vegan red velvet cupcakes! then we walked the boardwalk and debated getting tattoos…we didn’t.

some highlights: Ali’s orange rain boots, walking on the sand in wedges, a sneak peek of the prototype of a new ring i’m working on, an abandoned freak show, crazy painted walls, a psychic dog, and a lonely felt mustache that Ali spotted on the boardwalk…it was a sign!

my duds: Velvet dress, Target lace leggings and scarf, Kmart yellow jacket, vintage Dior leg warmers, steve madden boots, urban bag, all Mr. Kate jewelry including new ring (coming soon!). Ali’s duds: Hunter rain boots, american apparel shirt, random leggings and beanie, banana republic jacket, vintage purse, Mr. Kate jewelry (bow ring, screw you in black silver, black silver cereal ring).

Joey and i are watching Out Rage now. it’s a documentary about closeted gay politicians. it’s so fascinating/sad/maddening how their secrecy makes them hate the very thing they are, and thus vote against any gay rights measure. it is definitely a flaw in our culture that we don’t celebrate people for who they really are.

pretty happy feather girl

March 6th, 2010

i had lunch yesterday with one of the cutest, most photogenic (obvi!) gals i know… my buddy Natalie Distler. i’ve posted about her before as a happy customer here and she is also one of my models from my look book and currently hosts the “fingers” page in my shop here. she is an actress and singer and all around ball of light. she plays Denis Leary’s daughter Colleen, in the long running FX show Rescue Me, and has a really meaty season coming up, which she told me about over Native Foods goodness, and everyone should watch it!! also check out her band that she has with her equally stunning bf Kyle, listen to their music on their Myspace.

natalie is a huge Mr. Kate supporter and always rocks my jewelry in her own unique way, which inspires me so much! i love to see how people incorporate my designs into their individual style. she’s wearing all her own personal Mr. Kate wares, like the gold bolt necklace which, i don’t carry anymore in my shop, but she makes me want to revive it!

natalie’s duds: vintage boots, cheap monkey leg warmers, wildfox couture dress, urban sunnies and jacket, marc jacobs bag, handmade single feather earring from Slow on Melrose Ave, all vintage and Mr. Kate jewelry (mustache logo ring, nut n’ bolt earrings, screw crown ring, bow ring)

i heard about this art installation on KPCC/NPR (my go-to station any time i’m in my car) by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at Barbican Centre, London and i just had to look up the video. i love the colors of the birds, don’t they so match the photo of Natalie above? plus she’s like a pretty bird herself. i love the girl with the twig!!!
what are your thoughts about this kind of art? what do you think is his statement or commentary?

i love being a girl

March 4th, 2010

this is so powerful and so true. i think and talk often, amongst friends, about this global predicament; how girls are raised/conditioned to be less than and praised as “pleasers” and that everything unfeminine and non-”girl” is considered powerful and productive. there is so much power in femininity and in the “girl” in all of us, girl and boy alike. i really believe that, like Eve says, we all have both a feminine and masculine side that needs to be celebrated and nurtured equally. please take the time to watch this and let me know your thoughts. I LOVE BEING A GIRL!

Eve Ensler is the founder of the V Day charity (“a global movement to end violence against women and girls”), where i donate some of the profits from the sales of my “screw you” necklace.
