mega post: grocery lists and no brainer recipes

Friday, August 27th, 2010

As some of you who read my blog regularly may know, I’ve been vegan/macro-biotic since last December. It’s really not that hard and I’ve been loving it and feeling great so far. This is a post I have been meaning to do for a while and after pleading from my friends and family, I sat down to finally compile my grocery lists that enable my easy, on-the-go vegan lifestyle. The following lists are compiled from what I really buy every week/month and they are totally doable by anyone chef, or non chef and wealthy, or financially challenged (like me!)… don’t be overwhelmed, just go shopping! Here is a PDF of the grocery lists so you can print and take them with you. Read below the lists for some quick and easy recipe ideas using the items from the grocery lists…

Like I said, no time to go the the farmer’s market?..then get fresh, local produce delivered to your home or office from places like Farm Fresh To You or google for your local delivery service.

And here are some things you can make with your new purchases….these are just a few suggestions but get creative and also know you can quickly make a sandwich, salad, wrap, stir-fry, pasta dish or steamed rice and veggie dish out of any/all of the savory items above and there are lots of snack, dessert and breakfast options too!

PDF of the recipe cards to print.

Cookware/Kitchen must haves: 1. Large pot for steaming and cooking rice, beans, pasta and soups. 2. Steamer basket 4. Frying pan and/or wok 5. Good and sharp knife. 6. Wooden spoons for stirring.

ENJOY and good luck and please let me know if you have any questions or comments!!!!!!

after school snack: ice cream and chocolate chips

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

After School Snacks used to be one of my favorite things because i was always famished after school and my mom would always prepare the yummiest and healthiest after-school-snacks! so, i have hence dubbed anything that i eat in the afternoon hours my After School Snack.

i pretty much eat around 4 to 5 times per day. call it grazing, call it piglet, call it whatever you like, i need to keep my blood sugar up and snacks to that for me! it could be as simple as a sip of some green juice or a bowl of rice with Miso Mayo or whatever…but i also like sweets:

i’ve blogged about this ice cream before but it’s worth a second post, it’s called Luna & Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss and is sweetened with agave nectar which makes it lower glycemic (easier on your blood sugar levels which ultimately effect your metabolism and gauge whether you hang on to fat, etc.)

Eat: i topped my Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica ice cream with some low glycemic grain sweetened (meaning brown rice syrup or barley malt) vegan chocolate chips made by Sunspire, which i always keep in my fridge for a quick sweet fix.
both products can be found at Whole Foods or check your local health food store and you can also purchase the Grain Sweetened Chocolate Chips here.

kickballz

joey is in a kickball league. he’s very into it. the season is over now but i think he’s going to join again. i’m so not sporty, which i’m fine with and i’ve come to fully accept, so i’m the cheerleader/bleachers sitter. i think it’s great to have something active, outdoorsy and fun to do, even when you’re a grown up (woah, i guess i’m a grown up!). i’ve been trying to get back into dance class lately and i like hiking, and doing jumping jacks and squats on the back patio…does that count? what do you like to do.
