curvy style tips?

Shay asks: I am a size 16-18 30 year old woman. I feel like I’m in a style slump. Finding trendy clothes that fit me well is sometimes discouraging. Help!

Answer: I hear you Shay! Everyone, no matter what size you wear, can get in style slumps from time to time. I say, the best way to get out of a slump is to buy something outside your comfort zone and experiment with pairing it with some of your existing wardrobe items. You may find that you love harem pants, or mixing prints, layering, etc. and from there, you’ll tip yourself off to what else to get, to fit in with your new, inspired looks. I think curves are beautiful and fortunately these days, there are many hip and inexpensive stores that are offering plus size lines of clothing (that are 30+ appropriate). PS – I kind of dislike the term “plus size”…like, what does that mean? They’re still “sizes”. I prefer the term “curvy” because I think it promotes a much healthier and accepting view of women with curves as opposed to being beyond “normal” sized aka “plus”… okay, done with my rant.

I pulled some photos of my favorite looks for curvy girls, but basically, there are no rules for what you should wear: go with all the prints, lengths, styles you’re attracted to and experiment with different looks in the mirror.Remember, the trend that will never die: confidence!

So from casual to classy, to funky and playful, let’s take a look at some of my curvy style favorites…

My friend and gorgeous, curvy fashion blogger, Gabi Fresh blogs about her unique and funky style and fashion finds. This photo shows her use of layers, bright colors, and juxtaposition of girly floral and casual hightop, wedge sneakers – a trend I love and looks great on curvy girls! Gabi is the queen of showing that, just because you’re curvy, doesn’t mean you can’t layer or rock a hott bikini!

I love a maxi skirt with a tucked in tee! This outfit from ASOS Curve features a high waistband that elongates the legs (especially when paired with shoes in the same color). Jewelry, gold tipped boots, and fedora complete the look!

All of these amazing looks are from Forever 21+. I’d like to point out how many great styling trends there are going on here!: Bright colored skinny jeans and a sheer top, patterned leggings and a biker jacket layered over a slouchy tee, polka-dot short shorts, harem pants (a personal fave), maxi dress and layered skinny belts, and a hipster hat! There are so many great moments going on here. When shopping for things like maxi dresses and harem pants – go a size up so you have some baggy-ness to play with belts, etc.

Be bright and bold! This “skater dress” from  Sonsi has a cut-out at the top… learn how to make your own cut-outs on button down shirts here.

Just in time for Summer ASOS Curve has these lace shorts – but of course you can DIY your own! Embrace your curves and styles of the moment: embellished demin and a DIY rose crown – you can’t go wrong!

Here Gabi looks super fresh and classy in this ASOS Maternity dress that she styled with black tights and some radical round sunnies – that looked like they’re embellished with pearls and hey, we have a DIY for that too!

A fit-n-flare dress from Cult of California. Galaxy print, exposed zipper in back and styled with Adele-esque 1960′s hair and make-up…love! You could wear a dress like this with fancy shoes for a cocktail thingy or pair it with boots and a jean or moto jacket for a more casual look.

Plus size model Lily Cummings rocking a mod, Diane Keaton vibe. Add a pop of bling with a statement ring and I love the layered vest over a sheer top.

Boyfriend jeans are one of my go-tos when I need to throw on something quick and they’re great to dress up with heels, or down with wedge sneakers or flat sandals. I love that ASOS makes boyfriend jeans for curvy girlsand I also love how they styled this look with a playful fox-print tee and army green jacket.

Here here Lily! I hope these looks inspired you to get excited about your style…they did for me! What’s your favorite look? Chime in below and let me know how you like to style your curves.
