this room is also successful in showing you that one pop of color doesn’t necessarily have to justify the other one if it is against a neutral setting. the rose pink color of the flowers and the mustard shades of the artwork stand alone, yet totally work together!

earlier today i was at my Grandma’s apartment in NYC going through her faux finishing books – she used to work at a faux finishing art studio. i want to do some kind of fantastic faux on my coffee table at home – the one we found on the side of the road – and i think i’m going to do malachite (green stone) inspired finish or possibly a lapis (royal blue stone). anyways, after i got home, i saw this watch online which totally looks like a giant chunk of lapis with a yellow gold face! ughghghg i want it!!!

we snapped this pics on Christopher St. in the West Village where my mom lives. i love the village, it’s so quaint! i would have to say this is sort of a uniform for me at this point…sheer top, cut off shorts, tights, funky shoes, lots o’ jewelry, statement lips.

before there was photoshop… there were pin-up drawings of real photos of real woman that they still augmented! WTF!? woman always need to be tweaked and snipped, even at the hand of some artist in the 1950′s!?

most of us are familiar with the classic pin-up drawings of the 1940′s and 50′s, but i didn’t realize that they were based off of real photos of women. Retronaut posted these intriguing before and after photos of pin-up girls proving that, even back then, they felt the need to slim and embellish women’s bodies. what do you all think? is this just art or do you think back then it had an effect on women’s body issues like excessive photoshopping does to us today?  – see more about photoshopped photos here!

Smiley here! last weekend, i visited the Scribe Winery in Sonoma with some friends. the land is insanely gorgeous, as you can see from the pictures but the history of the land is equally amazing. in 1858, a famous champagne producer named Emil Dresel moved to California in search of fortune.  he settled in Sonoma and began growing grapes under the company name of Dresel wines and was awarded many prizes for his incredible wines.  however, all of this came to a halt when the Prohibition was enacted in 1920.

the Hacienda (above) that sits on the property used to be the home of the Dresel family and during Prohibition, the hacienda’s underground cellar became a safe haven for bootleggers.  word spread throughout Sonoma, and people seeking liquor would knock on the wooden door beneath the stairs and mumble the phrase “julius sent me” – allowing them to enter to thriving speakeasy under the home.
the door that opens the cellar is adorned with a map of Sonoma and the surrounding vineyards…. potential DIY project!
years later, it became the Scribe Winery and the team restored it to honor its 100 year old roots.  they carry on the commitment to the land that the Dresel family once had – practicing sustainability whenever possible.  even the bathroom inside the main office is gorgeous!

Chili and Lime Oven Roasted Broccolini (vegan)

Prep It:

  • 1 bundle of broccolini – i love the package or organic broccolini at Trader Joe’s
  • olive oil to drizzle
  • sea salt to taste
  • chili flakes to taste
  • half a lime

DO IT!:

  1. preheat your oven to 400 degrees
  2. lay your broccolini on a piece of foil on a baking sheet
  3. drizzle with olive oil
  4. sprinkle with sea salt
  5. sprinkle with red chili flakes
  6. bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the floret tips are lightly browned and the stalks are tender.
  7. turn the oven to broiler mode and finish for one more minute to crisp up the broccolini.
  8. remove the broccolini from the oven and squeeze your lime juice all over and eat up! sooooo tasty!
